Rocky Reviews: The Pink Phink (spoiler-free)

“The Pink Phink” is the first animated theatrical short subject in The Pink Panther cartoon series, as you all may know since we are on a pink panther fan website.

You all probably know that the panther’s first debut was of course in the 1963 Blake Edwards’ The Pink Panther, well in the opening titles at least. Here the pink panther was designed by co-director Hawley Pratt. This Incarnation of the panther was really weird, (to me that is), compared to the cartoon shorts, because the panther is like some kind of weird (in our age that is) British gentleman, (sorry for stereotypes) because he has a cigarette with a holder, and even more strange, A MONOCLE. Like what kind of character looks like a fancy old-fashioned gentleman, but gets slapped by the letter E for being attracted to Claudia Cardinale???!!!???

Anyway, back on topic. The film is about a painter who wants to paint a house blue, the panther wants to paint it pink. That’s it.

I like the simple art style, and the music is a great starting point, and the gags are funny, and clever.

I dislike the ending, it feels too long, and I wish the cartoon had more painting gags, but it is a 6 1/2 minute long cartoon, it’s not like it’s a feature film, but those are just nitpicks.

Overall I think that the pink phink is an EXCELLENT starting point for the character, it’s funny, simple, and it has great music, that will give it a 8.5 out of 10 rating. So long!

The pink phink, 1964, rated 8.5 out of 10 stars.
